These file types work great:
  • Microsoft Word (.DOC)
  • Plain Text (.TXT)
  • Rich Text (.RTF)
  • HTML Text (.HTM or .HTML)
If your file has some extension other than .rtf, .txt, .doc, .htm, or .html, you can still try uploading it; just make sure that it does not look seriously out of whack at the point where you can review your submission before it is final. If the pop-up view of your story looks crazy, do NOT complete the submission; instead, go back into your own document and save it as one of the known acceptable file types. To do that, open your own document, click on the "File" menu at the top left of the screen, choose "Save As". You can change the file type by clicking on the "Save as Type" list in the "Save As" dialog.

Note: Do not include any punctuation in the file name besides the period that precedes the doc, txt, rtf, htm, or html. In other words, MyMother’sFavorite#.doc would definitely not work. Instead, please just call it mymothersfavoritenumber.doc

If you are a Mac user, you might not be accustomed to file extensions at all, but your file name must end with an extension or the upload will not work. If your story name is My Story, change the file name to MyStory.doc, for instance.

Every story we publish is unsolicited, and 86% of the stories we accepted last year came to us directly from the writer.
That's exactly how we like it.
