Gina Ochsneris the author of two short-story collections, People I Wanted to Be and The Necessary Grace to Fall, both of which won the Oregon Book Award. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including The New Yorker, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, Glimmer Train, and many others. She is a recipient of several awards, including the Flannery O'Connor Award, Guggenheim and NEA grants, and the Raymond Carver Prize. Her latest book is The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight, which was longlisted for the Orange Prize, and which will be published in February 2010. www.ginaochsner.com |

I was telling Brian last night that I felt like the story I was working on was just giving me the runaround and that I was getting thrashed by it or maybe I was thrashing the story. I was sitting in the chair and pantomiming thrashing motions, you know, hands around my neck style, my tongue flopping about. I said to him, "I just don’t know who is going to win, me or the story." He gave me a funny look. "Well, who is supposed to win?" We looked at each other and said at the same time: "THE STORY!" | |
