Problem getting credit card info to work.

  • Visa/mc won't go through on a submission that requires a reading fee? Here are some possible issues:
  1. Please be sure not to use dashes or spaces in your visa/mc number.
  2. We've recently switched to a more secure credit-card processing bank and it absolutely requires that the billing address you provide (including the five-digit zip) matches the billing address your cc bank has on file for you. Check your physical bill (or look up your account information if your bill is emailed to you)—that is the address needed.
Outside the U.S.? A helpful customer (thank you, Tom!) told us this: Upon verifying my address with VISA, the fellow there related that they do not record foreign postal codes as "postal codes," a la US zip codes. They instead record them as part of the street address. So... I deleted my postal code and typed it in as part of my street address. Magic!
  • We are always happy to read your stories, whether they are sent as standard submissions (for which there are never any reading fees) or as competition submissions. Please see our Writing Guidelines.
  • Don't have, or want to use, a visa/mc? If your debit card has 16 digits and begins with a 4 or 5, it will probably work fine. Snail mail is okay, too.
