Making Snail Mail Submissions to Glimmer Train

If you cannot, or prefer not, to submit online for any reason—technical challenges, don't have or prefer not to use visa/mc and really, really want to make a competition submission instead of a standard story submission for which there are no reading fees, for instance—no worries. Snail mail is a perfectly good option!

Please just follow these instructions:

  • Please do not send your only copy. (Manuscripts will not be returned.)
  • Please do not fax or email your story; those methods don't get the piece into our editorial queue.
  • Be aware that only submissions made via the online submission site will show up under "My Submissions" at the site, but all submissions, whether made online or by snail mail, are welcome, read, and considered for publication.
  • If you're submitting to a category that requires a reading fee, please put your visa/mc # and expiration date on your cover letter, or include a personalized check. So we can focus on the story, rather than administrative issues, the story and the reading fee must come in the same envelope.
  • Be aware that reading fees are deposited periodically. (There are just the two of us and reading takes priority.)
  • Outside the U.S.? If you choose a competition rather than the standard category, please be sure to provide visa/mc # and expiration, because our bank will only accept checks drawn directly on US banks, I'm sorry.
  • Please be SURE to note competition name in your cover letter as well as on the outside of your mailing envelope.
  • Include a self-addressed, adequately stamped envelope stamped with US stamps (1.10 USD if outside the US) to get results.
  • If you are making a competition submission and want results other than "Your work wins" (we'll call or email you if that's the case—be sure we have good contact info on the first page of your story), you must write this on the SASE, too: For results of the May Short Story Award for New Writers competition (or whatever the competition is).

Send your submission by ordinary first-class mail (or airmail if outside the US) to this address:

Category Name (standard, very short, fiction open, whatever)
Glimmer Train Press, Inc.
P.O. Box 80430
Portland, OR 97280-1430

And don't worry. There is always a one-week grace period for all submissions so if you're having to submit a story by mail at the last minute because of technical difficulties, for instance, as long as the story is postmarked within 7 days of the close of that competition, you're fine.

We look forward to reading your work!
