What does Glimmer Train mean by "unpublished"?

When we buy first publication rights to a story (the only kind we buy), you are granting us the right to be the first publication to present the story in print. Previous online publication isn't a problem to us. If a story has won a prize—but will not be published—that's fine. And if you have, for instance, made copies for family and friends, as long as the number of copies you've made does not exceed 50 (fifty), that is okay, too. Our goal is to provide readers with great new fiction, and provide print publication for great stories that the public would not otherwise have the opportunity to read.

Every story we publish is unsolicited, and 86% of the stories we accepted last year came to us directly from the writer.
That's exactly how we like it.

One of the most respected short-story journals in print, Glimmer Train Stories is represented in recent editions of the Pushcart Prize, New Stories from the Midwest, O.Henry, New Stories from the South, Best of the West, and Best American Short Stories anthologies.
